I
don’t remember much from my childhood in Abadan. Only what my
deceased mother used to say; about the scorching weather & an
intolerable birth in the summer.
There’s nothing much to say about our move to Tehran.
But from our mud brick yard in Nezam Abad in Tehran; the memory of
two white pigeons shall always linger in my mind. The memory of
their two white wings is linked to half of my mental world consisted
of angels.
My friend from that old yard which is now crammed with cage like
apartments I remember many things, the two tall pine trees, a
fruitless apricot tree, a basket full of memories.
Those days, the traffic was not born yet and peddlers had not yet
bought stores. In the winter of those days charcoal used to be much
warmer than the sun’s rays and the alleys were full of children, but
really where are they now?
Probably, playing the game of life! Listen! You can hear their
clamor.
When I got 7, stunned with Ms.
Rafa’ti’s white chalky alphabets on the blackboard: “A”…. “A”…..

Her stick and the letter …A…
the first discipline, were in disparity with my childhood
imaginative world. Consequently, my notebooks were stored
with unfriendly sentences & words that I didn’t like. Alas,
the smaller pencils got, the darker notebooks became & how
easy they were ticked. And I thought to myself why her pen
of autocracy, is
red and endless. |

At
the end of each academic year, the start of the delightful summer
for me was like an icy winter as I used to fail repeatedly.
Childhood passed away so fast and all that remains from that old
yard and those memories lies in frigid ashes.

My
artistic period started in 1979, which is condensed in few drawing
notebooks. In 1983 finally after much endeavor I got accepted in the
Art University. Such a sweet atmosphere! Perhaps because, we were
the first group of students after the Cultural Revolution. We all
admired art, and I sketched from dawn to dust, with motivated
friends. The Profs guided us modestly who unfortunately are
emphasizing their own artistic style today & doubt what they taught
us, impose others to act like them. This is not agreeable at all!
But unfortunately it still exists.
Painting was described, unlike today! No one could paint what he
could or liked. I remember I sketched most of the nights of the week
until morning. All our models came from painting books. We nicknamed
each other after famous painters. I remember we drew most of the
nights of the week till morning. The models were sort of those of
drawing books’ characters. We were named actually by famous
painters.
The
profs’ analyzes were based on what they had learnt from the books on
their shelves which made us pattern-centered rather being
self-centered. We were encouraged to look at our surroundings
through well known artists’ eyes and to paint like them.
After that effective & enthusiastic period of youth, came the
productivity years. Concurrent with the MA courses, the concept of
painting became more alluring. Although it had become more serious,
the Profs expected us to follow the same routine and intended to
nourish their own fans. Thus, after a short period of time they
succeed and absorbed some followers especially those from the
provinces. We can still see the effects of those days. Anyhow, those
who were more careful pulled away from this situation. Of course
they suffered form the lack of attention and this fire became warmer
and warmer until its flames has caught everyone.
Another melancholic reality is that the artists are known as long as
they live, as they pass away, no one remembers them. Who knows the
Messrs.
Jalil Ziapour,
Javad Hamidi
or Ali Asghar Mohammadi?
This made me to believe in my self and to flourish teens who are
interested to know about Iranian artists; therefore, I started
teaching from 1985 & seriously from 1991 & graduated some effective
pupils mostly from my workshops.
I
paint in figurative style because am extremely interested in human &
his destiny in particular, that’s why the subject I work on always
is human anatomy. Besides other subjects Shahnameh’s heroes have a
great effect on me, as far as I can paint; they play an effective
role on my paintings.
